Ribbon, pretty ribbon
It's for wrapping presents
It's for tying bows in hair
It's used at weddings
It's used for necklaces

But I use it a different way

I use it in a darker way
When did I first do it?
I can't remember really
Ribbon, pretty ribbon

Wrapped around my neck

Pull tight, no air
Face red, eyes bulging
Mouth gasping desperately
Hands never yielding

I

Just
Can't
Breathe
And then

My arms relax, the ribbon falls

Air rushes in, and I breathe
The air burns my tired lungs
The blood rushes out of my face
And I live for that moment

You ask why, so innocent

I need control, this gives me it
I can take away my very breath
Stop the flow of my blood
It is my choice to start it again

It's not for the pain

It's not for death
It's not for attention
It's not for survival
I need the control

So the next time you see

A pretty girl with a ribbon
In her long tied up hair
Remember the many uses of
Ribbon, pretty ribbon
