My entry for PeaceLoveLingleton's challenge with vintage pictures. Unfortunately, the challenge was cancelled due to a complication with Booksie, but I did enjoy doing this.

Maria sat on the side of the road, waiting. She’d walked as far as she could, but now her feet hurt and she was tired and hungry. It must have been hours since she’d left the party, but she didn’t have a watch and her cell phone was dead. She couldn’t believe this was happening to her. First her mom had refused to let her borrow the car, and then she hadn’t even shown up. And finally, no one would give her a ride home. And these were her friends! With little alternative, she had set off on the way home, on foot.

Sure, her life wasn’t perfect, but she’d thought it was better than this. She’d thought she had friends, that her friends were good people. She was pretty, and so people paid attention to her. But even Amelia, her supposed BFF, had said “Oh, your mom’ll get here, don’t worry about it. Besides, we’re going the other way.” Then she’d driven off with Ted Summers and the others and left her there. Even though everyone knew her mom wasn’t dependable.
You know how she is, Maria thought to herself.
Yeah, she doesn’t care.
She doesn’t care that you’re alone in the dark on some street in the middle of the night.
Maybe she’s not coming back.
Just then, a pair of headlights came down the road. Maybe if it wasn’t her mom, maybe they could give her a ride.
