The Devil's Heart.

It was mid June, she was digging a hole. Daphne was about eight years old, her friends had invited her to go to church. She loved it, she loved learning about God and the devil, she grew to like god, but she grew more attached to the devil, not by his acts, but she felt bad for him.  He had no light in his life and all he did was tempt people.

When she got home that very day she went to her backyard and dug a hole. She was determined to find the devil, even if she had to dig her whole life to find hell, she carved to see him and learn about him and learn why he does what he does. It wasn’t fair… everyone had a life, but not him. And she was determined to help him.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daphne was now sixteen, she had grown beautifully in her wretched home with her abusive father and obnoxious brother. She grew away from the church, far far away.  If there was a god, why would he let her suffer through these things?

Everyday after school she would go to her back yard and dig. She knew there was no such thing as the devil, but she still dug in hopes to take her mind off of stuff. The hole had grown very big considering she had dug for 2,920 days. (She kept track) She would dig to her heart's content. She never had food and she wasted all of her energy on digging so she was very weak and scrawny.

It was a rough day at school, the girls were calling her boney and the bots were shooting spit wads at her… the usual. But today it had been worse she got home, dug her hole and did some homework, but then her brother through a sprinkler down the hole and it was too muddy to climb out so she had to wait it out and wait for her brother to finally be nice and throw down a ladder, if that would be long enough. She spent the whole night there with the water still filling up so it was hard to sleep and keep above water. The morning came and the water finally turned off. Her hands were soggy along with her whole body.

“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING DOWN THERE!!!” Her dad looked very angry.

“Thomas through a sprinkler down here and I couldn’t get out!!” She said faultlessly.

“YOU’D BETTER NOT HAVE MISSED THE BUS ‘CAUSE I AIN'T GONNA DRIVE YOU TO SCHOOL!!! AND IF I DO, YOU ARE GONNA HAVE A HUGE CONSEQUENCE HEADING YOUR WAY!!! YOU HEAR ME!?” He let out a smirk and watched her struggle to crawl out.

“Can you please throw me a rope or a ladder?” She politely asked.

“PSHT NO! YOU CAN DO IT!!! I DIDN'T RAISE A WEAKLING!!! OR DID I?” He licked his moustache and walked away. “I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AFTER YOU GET OUT!”

Daphne groaned “Ah C'mon, this is impossible! Life is impossible!!!” She paused. “Life is impossible…” She looked up to the sky and sighed. ‘I’ve lived in sorrow all my life… I can’t do it anymore…’

She collapsed and lied in the huge puddle or river of water, she lowered her head and dipped it in the water, it was cold. She held it down and felt her lungs burning for air. But then she felt all the pain leave. She was floating out of the hole, she could see her house and then her town and then the earth was drifting away. She stopped and felt herself fall She was falling back down to the earth, the surface was coming close and boom! She felt no pain but she could feel herself being sucked into the earth deeper and deeper and deeper until she saw a red light. She blinked a few times and it turned out being a door, she silently walked towards it.

She had no idea where she was,but she knew she had to keep walking and find out. The door handle was hot but she still tried to open it. The door was light and easy to push open, she peeked into the room and saw a chair… just, a chair. She looked around and the chair turned her way.

“Miss Daphne, glad you could make it to-” the man paused and stared intently at her. “Daphne… what are you doing here?”

She looked at him and tilted her head. “Do I know you, and technically I don’t know where I even am…” She paused. “Do you think you can help me?”

“How did you die???”

She paused, “I didn’t die, I just came down here…. Ugh I don’t know.”

“HOW DID YOU DIE!!! I SWEAR I’LL KILL THE PERSON WHO KILLED YOU!!!!” His black eyes turned a deep crimson color and he glared at her. Daphne didn’t know what was going on but she didn’t want anyone killed.

“I KILLED MYSELF!!!” She shouted and she could see the crimson soften from his eyes. He turned around and walked to the wall and leaned on it for a matter of moments. Daphne could see he was shaking which only made her think… he was crying.

“What’s wrong?” She asked half heartedly.

“I hate this…”

Daphne looked around. “Hate what?”

“THIS!!! PEOPLE LIKE YOU!!! YOU ACTUALLY HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO AND HAVE A BODY AND A LIFE AND I’M STUCK DOWN HERE!!!!” He paused momentarily and chuckled trying to shoo away his fit of anger. “... You actually had a chance and you ended it… You let go… you let go of the thing I want most…”

“What do you want most?”

“Forgiveness… and a body… a second chance. A chance to be good! I am getting sick and tired of tempting people… I want to be the good guy, i’m sick of being the bad guy…”

Daphne stood there shocked. “Well… why don’t you be good?”

He slammed his fist on the desk nearby “Because i’m destined to stay here in this rotting hell, literally.”

“Well. Just think… This could be worse, you could actually be in hell!” Daphne replied.

The man's eyebrows lifted and he let out a large laugh, He went to a window and pulled the blind all the way up, the room lit up in a red and orange color, Daphne peered out and saw lava and fire, people sitting around isolated and alone, weeping to themselves.

She could feel the man get close to her ear, “Welcome to hell sweety.”

Daphne gasped. “NO!!! I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING BAD!!! I HAVE LIVED MY LIVE AS A GOOD PERSON… GRANTED I SWEAR AND DO A FEW OTHER THINGS, BUT NOTHING TOO SEVERE, THERE MUST BE A MISTAKE!” She cried.

The man sat at his desk and offered her to sit in the seat across from him. She did.

“Welcome to hell, I will be your leader, the name is lucifer. Don’t expect me to be your friend, cause that’s not my job. Your parents didn’t pay me to be friends with soooo.”

“This isn’t funny!!!” She yelled and turned away.

“Actually it was missy. Look you may have not done too many things bad, but you participated in murder.” He replied.

“I NEVER KILLED ANYONE!!!”

“Uh… you killed yourself didn’t you. That is murderer. Just sayin’ I would normally give you a huge lecture about his place, but eh, you don’t need one. Just leave please.”

Daphne bit her lip and ran out the door and almost into a huge lava puddle, she went to a big slab of obsidian and threw herself upon it and weeped and weeped and weeped. Lucifer opened the window and  sighed sadly. He looked up and whispered ‘please give her a second chance.’

The next morning she awoke to comfort, she opened her coco eyes and looked around. She was in a bed, a very comfortable one in fact. Se mumbled things to herself and wandered around trying to find out where she was, then a light flickered on. She turned around and saw none other than Lucifer.

She nearly jumped out of her skins “WHAT THE HECK, I THOUGHT THAT WAS ALL A DREAM, AND AND AND, WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HERE?!?”

“Ummmm… it’s my room, calm yourself. Look I know who you are and what you did and what you thought long ago. You gave me hope. You tried to dig all the way down to hell just to tell me you're sorry and to give the devil a hug… you’ve got quite the heart to do that.”

“I used to have that heart, I don’t anymore.” She spat rudely.

He looked down, I have decided to try and give you a second chance. I can’t do that but I know someone who can…”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“What is this?” Asked Daphne.

“It’s a portal, it’s how god sent me here.”

“G-god is real!?!” Daphne screeched.

“Yes- we can reach him only if you truly believe and have a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Sadly I can’t go with you because I don’t have those things, but I guarantee you do.” He paused, “You can do it!”

“Why are you doing this for me?” She asked.

“Because you deserve a life.” He let out a gloom smile and walked away.

A big flash of light came forth and Daphne was being sucked up and then lucifer was being sent up as well.

*POOF*

The landing was very soft and the light was blinding. She turned to Lucifer who was weeping uncontrollably.

“Are you ok Lucifer? She asked.

He grabbed his face and held himself tightly. And with a croaked voice he replied. “2,578 years… I haven’t seen the sky, I haven’t returned to my real home and here I am…”

Daphne grabbed his shoulder and rubbed it gently. “Will you be able to stay?

“I doubt it, thanks for opening the portal Daphne… I needed to see this.”

“No problems thanks for letting me access it.”

“Lucifer.” The voice was sweet and loud. Lucifer looked up and saw the one person he wanted to see after all the years.

“Yes father?”

“Why are you here?” He said gently.

“I have found this girl, she ended her life and I feel like she has more to live for. Would you consider sending her back to earth or at least take her to heaven. I know she sinned but there is more that she is. She is amazing. She sees the light in people. She saw the light in me…”

God looked at the both of them, “And I see the light in everyone, including you Lucifer… I know what you did in heaven was a regrettable cause. I’ve wished you would try to ask forgiveness.”

“And I wish to have forgiveness… I’ll do anything for that. I’d give up everything for that, just for you to call me son and look upon me as a son of god… I am sorry for the contention I caused through the world, the many lives I’ve ruined. Will you father, will you forgive me?”

God look down and gave a big smile that led onto a laugh “I’ve waited thousands of years to hear that!!! Of course you are forgiven!!! Buuuut, you need to prove to me that you are worthy enough. You can stay in heaven as long as you want, but just know my trust hasn’t grown as much to let you proceed to earth, but know, you are welcome here.”

Lucifer looked up with tears in his eyes “THANK YOU FATHER!” He jumped to god and held him tight.

“Always my son… always”

“Now you Daphne… do you wish to finish your time on earth?” He asked.

“I would love that more than anything.”

“Well off you go then. The drop off is there. Just go to the cloud and jump!”

“Jump!?!”

“Trust me!”

Daphne made her way to the drop off, it seemed like a looong fall. She let her feet up and down she went and *PLUMP*

She could feel her lungs burning and things were cold, she realized she was still under water. She rose her head up and into the air. A smile escaped her lips and she confidently climbed out of the hole to tell her friend Kenna, what happened.

“YOU WERE DREAMING!!! THINGS LIKE THAT DON’T HAPPEN!!!”

“But it did, Lucifer, God all of that happened!”

“When people are close to death some of them see a glimpse of the afterlife! That must have happened to you.”

“Try to think of something bad Kenna, I dare you.”

“Wellll, I can’t  think of one at the moment. But that doesn’t prove anything.”

“Whatever, I know what I saw, and it ain’t going to change if you believe me or not.”

Two Years Later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She still missed him. It had been years but she still missed him, he made her feel somewhat different, segregated from the rest in a good way. But she had tried to forget him, so nothing came to mind most of the time.

She wandered the halls for lunch. She had no friends. She was always by herself. Daphne heard screaming, like from a thousand girls so she ran down the hall to see what was happening. The girls were all huddled around something, Daphne made her way into the crowd and saw something very familiar. Black eyes, none like the rest, just big pits of black that anyone could sink into. “Lucifer?” She whispered quietly trying to make sure no one heard. The eyes adverted to her and pushed through the other girls. “Daphne?”

Silence… The girls voices had faded and they all walked away.

“What are you doing here?” Daphne curiously asked.

“God gave me a chance. He said I was destined for something.”

“For What?” She asked.

“God sent me to be with you…. To take you out of your wretched home and give you something you hardly ever get…”

“And what might that be?”

“Love.”

Tears rolled down Daphne’s cheeks.

“My name is no longer Lucifer, God changed it to Saben. I Guess it’s close to sasten but I think it is cool.” He got down on one knee and cleared his throat. “Daphne, i understand we have only known eachother for a small time, but in that time I grew in love with you… I realize I am not the best man in the world. I am the evilest man in the world a-”

“You aren’t the evilest man in the world. You just started your life here, it’s a new beginning.”

“Well in that case, can my new beginning start with you being my wife?”

Daphne stared intently at him. “Are you serious?”

“100% serious.”

“YES!!!!”
