A girl, Dawn, lives in the year 4510 and the world is really polluted. Everyone is starting over - like Indians. Her dad is one of the selected men to take a spaceship into deep space and release all of the nuclear waste on a suicidal mission.

I huddle next to Mom, in the center of the dwelling.
“You will be escorted to the launching pad in five minutes,” the officer says. “Do not take any belongings, including clothes. These will be provided at the reservation.”
“Yes sir,” Dad replies. When the officer leaves, he turns to us. “I know this isn’t fun,” he acknowledges, “but be strong. How can I do my job if you’re in trouble?”
Dad looks at Mom, and his eyes grow sad. “Keep them safe, please,” he says, and she nods.
“Dura, look at me.” Dad orders. My twin brother lifts his head, tears in his eyes. I don’t watch, because I know how much he hates showing emotion. “You have to be me, now. You’re almost a man. This is what you must do. For your family, you have to be strong.”
“’Kay, Dad. Sure,” he agrees, his voice thick.
“And you,” Dad turns to me. “Dawn. This is hard for all of us, especially you. I want you to know that, no matter what happens, I love you.”
This is all too much. I burst into tears, burying my face in Dad’s chest.
“Don’t go!” I sob, but he gently pulls me away.
“I have to,” he says. “It’s the only way to keep you safe.”
Dad turns to face all of us. “You kids go with the officers,” he commands. “Keep Sunny with you. Just follow the crowd,” he reminds us, and shoos us out the door.
In the fall sunlight, it’s chilly. I can barely feel the cold, though, because I’m so upset. Sunny is oblivious to the depression in the air.
I stare at the silent buildings as we walk past them. Blank windows stare down at me, stories and stories of them. Watching. I can see the school building, so lonely without kids playing in front of it. Teleport offices are blocked off, the food stations shut down. Nobody will ever live here again, of that I’m certain.
The Eartube is unusually silent, until someone turns on his or her music. The song is sad, a girl singing by herself. Some sort of drum strikes up a slow beat. It’s like a perfect translation of what we all feel.
As we reach the city gates, I look behind me. Dura, Sunny, and I are the last in the procession – except for Mom. She runs after us and falls in beside Dura when we exit our home for the last time.

OCTOBER 3RD, 4510
Here in the reservation it’s dirty. It’s fun, in a way, but different. We sleep in huts without beds, and wash in the stream. Our food is going to be squirrels and rabbits if we can get them. Mom says we’ll be here forever, and I envy Dad. Well, no I don’t, really. However, I wish I had a toilet and an electric blanket. I think Dura figured out what I’m doing – I’d better go.

LATER
Actually, Dura just wanted to show me what he had. He had an Eartube channel that he wired to the launch! We’ll know what Dad’s doing now, and we’ll know what he’s doing when it happens. I can barely see the page I’m writing – it has to be past midnight. Did I mention that this bed is hard? It’s not even a bed, just some scratchy wool blankets on the dirt. Mom says that we’ll learn to weave better ones. I hope that that’ll be soon! Dura jus woke up and told me to go to sleep, so I guess I will. Good night.

OCTOBER 4TH 4510
Oh, this is NOT fun. I just woke up and it’s before dawn. I’m waiting for my turn to dress and I’m all alone, so I figured I’d better say that sleeping on the ground isn’t comfortable in the least. I’m just glad that Mom said Kat’s assigned to work on the same project as I am today. At least I already have a friend here – not like poor Rin. Mom’s coming out now.

OCTOBER 4TH 4510
It’s no fun here. All we have to eat was a little tiny piece of squirrel, and it was disgusting. The work is hard: we have to reinforce the ‘village’ boundaries with pine branches. Kat & I have to dig a fire pit, which was actually fun. At least you have to make something. Time for bed now, but I’m not tired. I wonder why…

OCTOBER 7TH 4510
Dura and I finally found time to listen to the Eartube channel. We could only do it late at night, 'cause we aren’t supposed to have anything from the city. So, anyways, we snuck out of the ‘village’ and listened in a pine. I forgot how horrible it is here while I was listening. This is what it said:

The Storm is a very nice ship, actually. The crew is made of seven men and women, all qualified engineers. They are silent and grim, each thinking about families they have left behind. Current location: The fortieth sector of the Jom Galaxy.

Dura and I are so disappointed. This doesn’t say ANYTHING about Dad. Nothing! I wonder how there’s an Eartube channel connected to us, out here in nowhere? Come to think of it, why does anyone bother with Eartube channels when there’s no one to listen?

OCTOBER 10TH 4510
Tonight’s when we’re going to have a party! Not a big one – it’s just Kat, Zoy, and me. We’re going to light a fire in the fire pit and tell stories about our parents. We’ve all had relatives go on the Storm, and we just want a chance to talk about it. We’re not doing anything wrong, really…just trying to help each other. That’s not bad, is it?
Dawn

OCTOBER 11TH 4510
Oh, I’m in sooo much trouble. We all got caught, and Mom’s absolutely livid. I tried to explain but she said “What would your father say” and how the heck am I supposed to answer THAT? From what Dura says, Kat and Zoy are both grounded, too. At least I’m not the only one.

OCTOBER 13TH 4510
This sucks. I’m just stuck here…all day…bored out of my skin. I wish I could ask Mom, “What would MY father say,” but that would just make everything worse. Dura says I’ve only got a week to go… I cant’ take it much longer! Since I’m here, might as well take a nap…erg.
Dawn

OCTOBER 18TH 4510
Well, only two days left of being stuck in this boring tent of a house. I’m so unbelievably stiff, like I slept on nails. Kat came to visit me today – her mom’s so nice to her, she only had 3 days of punishment. Why does this stuff happen to me?

OCTOBER 21ST 4510
Yes! I’m out! FINALLY. Sure, the work isn’t fun, but it’s better than that mindless boredom. Anything would be. Actually, what Dad’s doing isn’t. That reminds me – Dura and I listened to the Eartube again, it said that the ship is in the sixteenth division of the third sector of the Pamut Galaxy. It scares me. The Storm is going so fast.
