A girl sees a news report on her brother

I sat in shock as the news came on.

“Don Carter has been killed in a horrific gang attack.” The news reporter said in their strict style, but you could tell, you could just tell that they thought oh yeah, another gang death.

But that wasn’t anyone, that’s my brother, I thought as the news finished.

“Stacey, dinner.” My mum shouted.

How am I going to tell her? I thought.

I didn’t have to worry about it for long though because someone was knocking at the door. It was the police man.

She let him into our living room, it was only small, but most of the time it felt so warm and inviting, but today it seemed odd and cold. Even the chick red sofa in the corner looked like blood red.

Mum tutted.

“What’s that little bugger done now?” She groaned.

“I’m so sorry… but your son…” He stuttered.

“What’s happened?” Mum said putting her hand through her long dark hair.

“He’s died… in a gang war attack… we will get whoever did this.” He stammered some more.

“This can’t be real…” I murmured

“Too right it can’t.” My mum growled, “The police should be on the street stopping this kind of thing.”

“I’m sorry…” The police man said standing up and opening the door to leave. Mum led him out.

I didn’t have the heart to tell her Don had gotten involved in a gang. That he’d been smoking all kinds of bad things. That he kept a knife in his bottom draw, which is locked with a code only he knew. I only knew about the knife because I’d been looking for my coursework when I went into his room the draw was open and in it was the knife. He got a right cob on when I saw it.

“Why’d you come into my room, Stick.” He growled at me that day.

Stick was the nickname he gave me; because of the fact I was as skinny as a stick.
