Chapter 2
I shot up out of bed, breathing hard and my heart beating frantically. I relaxed as I realized it was a dream. I looked around my room and froze. A copper wolf stood by my door. I blinked in disbelief and the wolf was gone. My eyes must be playing tricks on me. I rubbed my eyes and got out of bed. The hardwood floor was cold under my feet and a gentle breeze blew in from my window. When did I have my window open? I felt something under my foot and I looked down to see what it was. Muddy paw prints scattered the ground and blood was in splotches around them. My body was paralyzed but my mind was racing. How? When? Why? The three words kept racing through my mind. Oh gosh. Is that copper fur I see floating across the ground? I fell to my knees and I didn’t try to catch myself. My knees flooded with pain and I finally came back to the real world. I moaned in pain and fell to my side. I grabbed my knees and cried to myself while surrounded by mud and blood.
When I finally sat up from the cold floor, I was covered in the mud and blood. Hopefully my foster parents weren’t up yet. I kept my fingers crossed as I snuck down the hall and to the bathroom. I turned on the shower and quickly jumped in. The warm water washed away some of my insecurities. There were still some picking at my brain.
I crept down to the kitchen and grabbed some cleaning solution and a mop. I went back up to my room and poured some of the cleaning junk on the floor. I took the mop to it and swirled it around the floor. After a couple of minutes, I dried it with an old holey towel. It looked good as new. I put everything away and when I was back in my room, I silently closed the window.
I still needed to get to school. The last thing I needed was to be absent on the first day of school. I pulled on a long, flowing, wheat colored skirt and a white blouse with a v cut neck line. I brushed back my hair and pulled it into a loose and messy bun. I quickly applied my makeup and looked myself over in the mirror. I actually looked like a friendly person. Where did these clothes even come from? I sighed quickly and grabbed my mp3, making a run for the front door.
I arrived at school an hour and a half late. The mystery of the bloody floor was buzzing around in my mind as I hurried to my locker. With my stuff in hand, I hurried to my class and burst in the door. The whole class turned to look at me and I felt my face go red. Maybe I should have been more quiet about coming in the room. I bent my head down and made my way to my seat.
“Do you have a pass, Ms. Lee?” My pudgy teacher asked. I shook my head.
“Forgot to set my alarm.” I told him, sitting down.
“Well, don’t let it happen again.” He said, his face smug. I felt a searing hatred for him and it made me want to tear his throat out. Stop! What am I thinking? What’s wrong with me? I shook my head and opened my Science book up to page 141.
“Rough morning?” Dominic whispered in my ear. I jumped in surprise. I had forgotten about him completely.
“Yeah.” I let out in a shaky voice.
“Are you alright?” He asked. I nodded. I felt his hand on my shoulder as he tried to comfort me. His touch made my skin tingle.
“I really am alright.” I said, keeping my voice steady. His hand disappeared.
“I almost forgot. Have you seen the paper this morning?” He asked. I shook my head. Dominic handed me a newspaper and I froze.
The headline read: GIRL FOUND DEAD WHILE FISHING. I stifled a gasp and tried not to hurl. This couldn’t be real. My eyes scanned over the reading and everything went in perfectly.
“Hey. What’s wrong?” Dominic asked. I ignored his kind voice and shot out of the room. No. This could not be real. I had seen the hunt and there had been traces of a wolf in my room.
I ran into the woods, trying to get away from the world. The path was covered in mud and I kept trying to keep my footing. I tripped over a mud covered stick and fell into a giant mud puddle. I didn’t try to get up but instead started crying as I lay in the mud.
I heard a rustling behind me that was farther down the trail and some inside instinct told me to hide. Listening to my instinct, I hid among some bushes and waited to see who was coming. Dominic appeared in front of the bushes. He stood there, looking for something or me. For some unknown reason, I wanted to hurt him. I kept myself from hurling out of the bushes and stayed put.
Dominic moved on and I let out a sigh of relief. Then I heard a twig snap behind me and I felt cold arms wrap around my waist. I screamed as I kicked, trying to get away from my captor.
“Stop! I’m not going to hurt you!” Dominic shouted. My kicking stopped but I kept myself wary.
“Why are you here?” I asked him. He turned me to face him and looked into my eyes.
“I followed you. You were upset.” He told me. I sighed.
“I was fine.” I retorted, wriggling out of his grip. He let me and I started to walk away. He grabbed my arm and spun me around to face him again.
“I need to tell you something.” He whispered. I looked at him.
“Tell me then.” I told him. He smiled and then, as quick as a striking snake, kissed me. His lips were cold and stone like on mine as he kissed me. I unknowingly kissed him back and then as quick as it started, it ended.
“Did you hear me?” He asked.
“Loud and clear.” I replied. My wariness disappeared and was replaced by affection.
“What have I done?” He whispered, his face turning grave.
“You’ve given me a reason to be who I used to be.” I told him, my face bright. He looked into my eyes.
“Why did you ever change who you were?” He asked. A cloud of sadness swept over me as memory took over my emotions.
“I don’t remember a lot because of the amnesia I gained.” I told him.
“Tell me what you remember.” He prompted me. I sighed and wiped a tear away.
“I remember the sheriff finding me crying in the woods and I remember the blood running like a waterfall down the stairs. The sheriff told me what happened.” I said.
“My dad had gotten drunk that night and I mean really drunk. He and my mom were arguing. He grabbed a knife.” I whispered, my legs giving out from under me. Dominic picked me up and pressed me close to his chest. I clung to him.
“He stabbed my mom and I saw her blood run down the stairs. I had been watching the scene from the bottom of the stairs, which is how I remember it.” I whispered.
“Next thing I know, I’m in the woods crying with the sheriff putting a blanket around me. He told me what happened later and then I was put in foster care.” I said.
“So to conclude. My dad was hauled off to jail and my mom was put in a body bag.” I cried, clutching at his shirt. He held me close to him and I wrapped myself in his comfort.
“It’s okay.” He said, gently rubbing my back.
“I just want to go home.” I said, wiping my tears away.
“Where do you live?” He asked.
“Sixth street, third house on the left.” I told him. He carried me out of the woods and down all of the roads until we reached mine. My foster parents weren’t home, which was a relief and I left Dominic outside. He gave me a swift kiss on the cheek and then was gone.
I went up the stairs and flopped down on my bed with exhaustion. The events of today swept over me and the fear of this morning came back. I knew everything. I wouldn’t need details from the news because I had seen it all happen. Oh god, am I a monster?
**
The smell of the enemy wafted on the air as I silently sniffed the air. This beast has left only death in its path and terror in his wake. I had to bring him down. This dark killer has the face of a Greek God but it won’t fool me because I know the supernatural.
Clouds caressed the golden moon as the night drifted on and cast its spell of mystery. I was a silent ghost of this world as I padded silently through the woods, the hair on my back raised. My enemy may be quick but I am clever. He won’t stand a chance when my teeth meet his strength.
I approached the lake shore, the smell of him almost unbearable. He stood by the red stained water as he held a small form in his arms. The little boy’s arms and legs were twitching as his blood was drained. White hot fury surged through me as I knew this little boy would never grow up and know what life is truly about.
I let out a vicious snarl as I bared my teeth and the vampire turned to face me. Recognition struck me unexpectedly as I saw his face. I shoved it away. This was my enemy and he was committing his crime in front of me. His face showed shock as the little boy dropped from his arms and onto the shore. I licked my chops as I pictured this monster dead at my paws.
“Amy, it‘s me Dominic.” He whispered. I pricked my ears at the names and snarled louder. The names meant nothing to me. I am Kanara. I lunged at him and I saw his eyes contract with betray. My large paws thudded against his chest as I tried to get a hold on his throat. He kept screaming the name “Amy” but each time I ignored it. My claws raked across his right cheek and left bloody marks.
“You can’t be one of them!” He yelled. One of what? Something in his eyes caught me, something so deep with pain that it paralyzed me. His eyes filled with tears and he pushed me off of him. He disappeared into the night and movement came back to my limbs. Why had I let that creature go? A small cry made me forget it all and I turned to face the half changed boy. I couldn’t let him live, not now. I changed back to human form and gently made my way to the boy. His breath was ragged as eh tried to draw in air. His eyes lit up when he saw me.
“Are you an angel?” He asked with a hoarse voice. A tear welled in my eyes.
“No, I’m much better than that. I am a guardian and I’m here to save you from a fate worse than death.” I told him, pushing hair out of his eyes. He smiled weakly.
“Thank you.” He whispered with a breath as low as a whisper. I smiled and changed into wolf form again so I could kill him for good.
