The Dawn Service

Thursday, 25 April 2013

3:10 PM

sprigs of rosemary lying in the baskets

we take up shining candles

to show us the way

in the half-light of this frosty dawn

we listen to the speeches, songs

they talk of sweet red poppies with their death-dark centres

and the men who lost their lives

so long ago

all the ringing voices

passing down the burden to us

through the years

generation giving to generation

taking up the knowledge

they tell us of families poisoned by death and pain

and the hungry darkness spreading over

those brought back

their empty eyes speaking of unknown horrors

we remember but do not take heed

no matter how regret calls us

knocking at our doors

human nature takes up the gun and goes to war

we are all different in this space

shiny black shoes and wellingtons biting into the grass

some wear suits

and others blankets

some faces are bright with the past

and others half-asleep

what unites us is why we came:

to remember those who have left us here alone

and in the mist that curls from our mouths I think I see

all the faces of the sombre dead

staring back at us

they are the gentle hands upon our stiff shoulders

lest we forget.
