Profile Information

Hello You!

Here's a little bit about me. My name is Collins Mugodo. My friends call me Collins for short and i guess you can too ;) I was born in Nairobi Kenya and raised there until i was about 7 or 8 After which I found myself in Belgium because of my dad's awesome job. Belgium was great, made lots of friends there, went to a brillient school by really anyone's was free though...because dad's awesome job. And most importantly I learnt a lot of my English vocabulary there (My first language was actually Swahili...and a little bit of luyah which was my dad's tribal tongue). I lived in belgium for 4 pretty good years until i was about 12 then I moved back to Kenya which is probably the place where I discovered I could express myself with words....before that, the whole Idea was distant to me. I didn't really think of it as a possibility for someone like me. It started off with rap music because it was cool but to be honest i never really got that good at it but i wasn't bad either. I rapped because my friends rapped and i thought it was cool. Gave myself a nickname and everything ( have now forgotten it) but after 3 short but really good years, I moved to where I live now, New York. Again because of my dad's...awesome job and I was still writing raps here and there but I just wasn't really getting any rhythm and flow in them like I kinda used to and the more I tried the worse it got. So I least for a little while. I abandoned writing for about 6 months i think. It was when I saw the show on HBO Brave New Voices that that creative spark lit again. immediately after that show I went upstairs to my room, locked the door and started to write. Didn't edit that much because I was afraid to mess up the poem and it looked amaing that day but by the next day I really didn't care for it so I ripped it up and threw it away and started work on a new one entitled "Bloody Peace". An angry poem just like I saw on the show. I liked it and decided to post it on my notes on facebook, tagged a few of my friends from Kenya and a few people I didn't really talk to...ever. Didn't really think much of it, few days later I logged on, got the feedback, it was positive...but you expect that from your friends don't yah. So again I didn't think much of it. Till my brother sat me down and kinda was like "I read ur poem, how long have you been writing poetry?" I'm like not too long I've only ever written two and he went on about how I could really have something if I could grasp such a complex art so quickly. My brother never talks anyone up like that so that got me absolutely obsessed and at first it was just obsession but the more time went by the deeper in love I fell with the art and fast forward to 2012 I am sharing it on Booksie.

My style

I'm a very free writer, not too obsessed with the fancy in my writing, though I don't mind it too much in other people's writing. I take influence from the likes of Andrea Gibson, Sarah Kay, Gemineye and Black Ice in the spoken world and much older poets like langston hughes, Dorothy Parker and Ogden Nash. I definately wouldn't really put my work in a box with any of these artists because i think each of them are out on their own in terms of artistic style and I think that is also where I lay because I don't really know what kind of poetry I write or tend to write because to be honest having done poetry exclusive for only maybe two and a half years, I feel relatively new to it but I hope you like it.
