I'm an Irish-Australian writer, a retired scientist. Between 1965 and 1970, when I still lived in Ireland, I visited Norway three times and was blown away by the grandeur of the place, most especially the fjords and mountains of Western Norway. It came to me then that I wanted to write a story set in those parts - but it was a long time in the gestation, and morphed a lot in the process.
Because at the time I was an SF fan (and still am, though to a lesser degree) it ended up as an SF story, at least in the sense of being set in the future, in a post-Disaster world of the late 21st century. My working title for it was The Gandreid Project, although that changed a few times, too. Pressure of work kept me from doing much work on it until I partially retired in 2005. The work was "finished" early in 2008.
A publisher that I approached, who showed cautious interest, said that it was really too long, and suggested I split in into two. This took the best part of a year, and I ended up with An Irish Navigator and Elongated Orbit. The publisher's acquisitions editor had changed by this time, and they were no longer interested, so I've published these twin novels through Lulu. All the details are on my website, where you can find blurbs, excerpts, and can even (if you're patient enough to wait) read the whole of An Irish Navigator in installments.
