Poem / Religion and Spirituality
I was born and brought up in Pittsburgh, Pa. USA. At a young age I had several spiritual experiences such as when an angel came into my room and when I gave my life to the Lord on a walk home from school one day.
During the turbulent 60's and 70's against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and hippie movement I struggled to find my identity. I won a summer scholarship to study film at Westminister College and later attended RIT studying photographic illustration. Like many of the youth of my day I embarked on a spiritual search for how I fit into the cosmos, the nature and truth of reality, and what really matters in life. I tried drugs but found myself more confused than ever. One time I lay back in the snow after a bad trip and saw huge demons rising out of the campus buildings. Two men approached me and I overheard them talking "Let's get him." the other answered, "No, we can't. He's one of them." At the time, I didn't understand what they meant, but now I do.
I tried to start an art movement with my artist friend called "Wierdism" but when our first exhibition was tossed into the trash by a janitor who thought it was...well, trash, we realized that we were somehow missing the mark.
That summer, my dog and I went out to my father's farm, which was now just a deserted uninhabited wilderness. There I lived on soybeans and wild strawberries. I spent my days writing poetry, taking long walks in the forest and refreshing swims in the river. It was there with some help from my sister and friends that I came to know Jesus on a personal basis. Something you might want to try if you haven't yet.
I soon after went into full time Christian service and left the US at the age of 19. I have lived in a wide variety of countries such as Indonesia, Japan, Uganda, India, Jordan, and now Germany. These experiences have deeply influenced my writing. I have also produced and performed stories at various venues and theatres in the countries where I resided.
After visiting my mom in her later years, I realized that if I waited till my later years to write, it would be all very foggy and merely distant memories. I asked her for stories of her life to preserve for posterity and she was done in 45 minutes! - Something I didn't want to happen to me. From that time on, I pledged to write down anything of significance that entered my life. I have tried to be faithful to that promise and now reading back over what I have written, I am amazed at the expereinces I have had. It is like reading another writer. I have published quite a few articles for Activated magazine and others, which have been translated into about 10 languages.
I have become very involved in interactive story telling through mime and theatre. I founded Elixir Mime in 2009 which has performed and done acting and story telling workshops in over 10 countries.Every Friday night we give a storytelling performance at our coffee shop in the city center. I am interested in enacting stories from: the Bible, personal experiences - conscious as well as the subconscious, interviewing people, history, and traditional sources. I want to use my talent in writing to touch people in a special way.
I believe stories are a wonderful way to share our experiences, feelings, and dreams. I hope to let my light shine fuelled by the oil of the Spirit of Inspiration.
