Doug Hill (riverwriter) retired from teaching high school English and Theatre Arts in 1993.

Although teaching was his professional career, he has had a long and rich career in the arts as a writer, singer, lead performer, stage director of plays and musicals, stage manager, set designer and builder, lighting designer, teacher and consultant.

Some highlights:

Co-founder Glen Productions also stage director and lead performer for the Glen in the early years.

Director of several large cast Broadway Musicals and one original musical (libretto) with Brian McCartney for GVSS.

Co-author of Ontario's first Theatre Arts Handbook for Teachers, Published in Toronto by Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF)

Director in charge of programming and staffing as well as instructor for OSSTF's Summer Course at Brock University Theatre Arts Turns on on Teachers – first Theatre Arts course for teachers in Ontario. Three summers.

Award winning poet and playwright; Ottawa Valley Writers' Society Award for Humourous VerseDave Smith Award for one act version of A Song After Living which in the same year won the EODL Award for Best Original One Act Play. Subsequently contracted  by National Arts Centre as a member of the Writers' Unit, in which nine playwrights worked for a year with a two dramaturges and Equity actors, workshopping their plays at GCTC and Arts Court. Comic Monologue “Housewife's Tale” selected for publication in Playwrights' Union's first collection of Monologues.

Director and Tech Manager and script writer for MC Max Keeping for Glengarry Show at National Arts Centre's 2300 seat Southam Hall, 1977 to 1989.

Chair, Seaway Arts Council three yearsin the early to mid nineties

Performing member and variously an Executive Board member of C-Way Sound Barbershop Chorus, and sang baritone in the ubiquitous and popular local barbershop quartet Acapellics Anonymous.

Since 2016 his blog wordcurrents has featured his theatre reviews and over 1,150 poems viewed by multiple thousands of readers all over the world.

Invited to take part as a guest in Lucy Maude Montgomery Theatre's initial Summer workshops in Prince Edward Island by my ex-student, Duncan McIntosh, world renowned Artistic Director of such major projects as the rededication of the Vimy Memorial (Commissioned by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth) and JK Rowling's tour of Asia.

Currently, he is working on five novels simultaneously. (“I have discovered that if I focus on one novel for a long period of time, I eventually come to loathe it; my solution to the problems has been to work in a serial cycle on several novels at once. That was the key to staying with the process.”)

Designs and administers several websites for artists and non-profits.
