Profile Information

My name is Francis Mccollister. I am currently a freshman at Portland Community College. What I like to do on my free time more then anything is write. I have been into poetry and writing ever since I was a little kid. No matter what I do in life or what I want to do, poetry and writing seems to be the one thing that I always go back to and I can never push away. When I entered my freshman year at Roosevelt high school it was like something that opened inside saying " I can be me and write my own poetry and stories without any teacher saying its lame." So we did open mics every Friday in class and I would read a poem everyday. Then came Writers in the schools.                                                                                                                                           Where I first worked with Paul Flores in Spanish class (Yes I am bilingual and fluent in Spanish) and the first time I got invited to ever read a poem at Miracle Theater. It was the best experience I ever felt in my life. Then I read with Step up tutoring and worked with Daniel Beaty, I worked with Emma Oliver which was my fourth time doing a poetry slam at Lady Bug Cafe in St. Johns, My fifth time reading was at Open Meadow middle school/ Step Up to the Mic my Sophomore year, My sixth time was reading at school with Step Up my Sophomre year, My seventh time was reading at a poetry slam at a Moon Mural for Mississippi Clinic and I got interviewed by the Oregonian for being the youngest as well as new to that side of the community, My eighth poetry slam was a competiton with Verselandia Poetry Slam in April my junior year and I tied for third place and then became an alternate. I got to go to the mission theater and support the three poets from Roosevelt High School. Now that I am graduated I am waiting for school to start in the fall and I want to get into Journalism as well as major in education so that I can inspire youth to be their own writers and to think. I am considering doing poetry slams again, but this time at Baclspace Cafe in Portland, Oregon to keep going and inspire. Thank you for reading about my history :)
