Profile Information

I was born in 1950 in Pensacola, Florida as Robert Hugh Cotton. I lived in Florida until I entered Jacksonville State University (Jacksonville, Alabama) in 1968. My study abroad (1970-1971) was as a student of the University of Heidelberg. I graduated from Jacksonville State University at the end of the fall semester of 1972 with a major in English. I entered a master's program of Sophia University (Jochi Daigaku), a private university in Tokyo in December of 1973 to do an East Asian Studies program which I did not finish. While studying at Sophia University, I began working at Daito Bunka University (also in Tokyo), first as a substitute teacher (October of 1974 to March of 1976), then as an adjunct faculty member, a non-tenured fulltime lecturer, a tenured assistant professor, and finally as a full professor. While working, I got a master's degree in English from St. Paul's University (Rikkyo Daigaku) and a doctor's degree from Daito Bunka University. My PhD dissertation was a comparative historical prosodic study of the triolet verse form from the perspective of geolinguistics. I am currently an academic advisor for master's level and doctor's level graduate students in the graduate school of Daito Bunka University where I teach linguistic ethnography and geolinguistics.
