J. Edmonde Bio

J. Edmonde was born in 1956 in San Francisco, California to an alcoholic father and mother who both exhibited signs of serious mental illness. Multiple marriages, divorces, poverty, foster homes, constant relocations, hunger, neglect, and mental and physical abuse were “just a part of growing up” for J. Edmonde. As a kid, he attended 16 schools in 12 years.

Hetells individual stories of his life which present in a raw, stark, yet poignant and emotion-driven point of view of a kid in crisis. The attention to detail in the pictures he paints of each image and feeling completely bring to life a kid learning to hang in and survive against all odds.

J. Edmonde says, “It is my hope through my stories that people may be able to really feel the hunger, the abuse, the neglect, the total helplessness my siblings and I lived through. I want them to be able to see, hear, taste, smell and touch it. That somehow, someway - should readers witness such situations - they may choose to act rather than look away. Maybe even move them enough to help, to intervene, to get involved and really do something for those kids. A simple PB&J sandwich can make a difference, if only momentary, to a hungry kid.”

Even though his stories are dark and at times, heart-wrenching in their detail, light still filters through the cracks. “I want kids who may be in similar situations today to know that there is hope,” he says. “Even neglected, abused kids can grow up and be okay.”
