"A writer lives, at least, in a state of astonishment. Beneath any feeling he has of the good or evil of the world lies a deeper one of wonder at it all. To transmit that feeling, he writes." William Sansom
I love this quote, as this is the challenge and joy of writing. To attempt to pen the feelings and emotions that experiences and observations bring into your life in a way that will grip and entertain the reader. I try to bring a real and sometimes humorous perspective to the stories I pen.
My real job, the one that pays the bills, is being the general manager of country clubs and currently, a yacht club. It is a very demanding career in that my job description, in a capsule, is to, "provide a level of experience to 400 Type A personalities in a way that none of them will ever complain". I will die early, trying to accomplish this.
I do not have a quick wit. My mind likes to observe, likes to watch and likes to imagine. I am not comfortable in social gatherings, feeling uncomfortable that I can't tell a joke without forgetting the punch line, and know that my timing is usually off when relating a story or event. Why? I am not sure, maybe because my mind is more interested in trying to convey the emotion of an event, rather than the content.
I marvel at the amazing talent of authors to spin a tale, develop a mystery in a way that captivates the reader so much that they can't set the book down. Is there anything better than getting lost in a book? The world and its cares simply slip away and you are transported into a wonderful adventure or romance...reading a good book is like a vacation for your mind.
Enjoy my feeble attempts and I hope that something I have shared touched your heart. If it did, let me know, I would love to hear from you. Life is short, so live with passion, share compassion, love deeply and appreciate the blessings of family and friends.
