Profile Information

My name is Ian P. Oliver; I am British and married with one daughter. I have been a writer all my life, it would seem, and became a professional writer when I joined the oil company, Aramco, in Saudi Arabia in 1980. Here, I was given the opportunity to develop my technical writing skills and have been developing them ever since. Since then I have held down technical writing, editing, designing and other publications-related jobs, all within the energy industries including as far afield as S.E. Asia, throughout the Middle East, Canada, North and West Africa and, of course, the UK. Currently I find myself working in Azerbaijan, a great country that borders Iran, Armenia, Turkey and Russia and sits on the West coast of the Caspian sea. If you’re still not sure, do a Google!
My great love in life is words. I enjoy reading immensely, and of course, I am in my element when I am writing about something. In my day job I am involved with engineering projects in Azerbaijan that cuts across the spectrum of design, engineering, procurement and construction (and everything else in-between). I am an ex-musician (amateur), published author of Buddhism in Britain (Rider & Co, London, 1979), have written four screenplays and I am half-way through my first novel about my working life in S. E. Asia. My most recent project is a book of short fictional stories, entitled Delayed Reaction, and is now ready for publication. I am also working on a non-fiction book, The 50 Most Buggered-up Cities on Earth.
I have written articles for UK newspapers and magazines, I used to compile cryptic crosswords – this was in a previous life when I was addicted to crosswords! I also like some sports, especially horse racing and football. Because of this, I used my advanced knowledge, especially of horse racing, to write an e-book entitled, The Sports Betting Guide. In that book I explain in minute detail how to win money using the Betfair website. I must add, by the way, that this e-book is not for sale - yet!!
My other interests revolve around the Internet. I have a YouTube channel with over 30 self-created videos, most of which are music biased. Buddhism plays a major part in my life, having discovered this wonderful religion and way of life, whilst only 20 years old. My Buddhist studies have taken me to such beautiful countries as Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Nepal and I have received direct teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. I also write articles covering all aspects of Buddhism from ethics, philosophy, meditation and history.
