Where to start?  Or just as difficult - where to stop?

What I do...that's where most people start I guess.  I'm an anthropologist by training and education.  I've worked as a curator, archaeologist and teacher.  My passion really though is traveling - filling my brain with images of how amazingly beautiful our planet is.  I love to study and experience other cultures.  I am utterly fascinated by history.  If I could do any one thing it would be to travel back in time to see familiar places in an unfamiliar era, experience its drama and the mundane first-hand, and see written history come alive and witness the unwritten history lost in time.  It should come as no surprise then that my favorite genre of literature is historical fiction.  (My favorite authors are Diana Gabaldon and Jean Auel.)

So what I really do, I suppose you could say, is travel the world at a leisurely pace.  In order to fund this grand scheme, I teach...usually English (although I find teaching the social and physical sciences much more exciting and rewarding).  Along the way I also enjoy sharing my experiences with others through writing and photography.  (You can check out my travelblogs at  It's all narrative and informative writing.  I prefer to write fiction, but honestly I haven't done so in years.  Maybe one day I'll get around to writing that historical fiction novel!

When asked above about my favorite book, I couldn't narrow it down to just one because I've had different favorites at different points in my life, and different books appeal to different senses or satisfy a particular mood.  But here are the ones which have stood out for me and I recommend:

As a pre-teen, I adored L.M. Montgomery.  I read everything published by her.  Anne of Green Gables and Emily of New Moon will always have a special place in my heart.  I'm a big fan of Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen.  I think Pride and Prejudice might be one of the most beautiful pieces of literature ever written.  In college, when I became interested in anthropology, I found Jean Auel and the Earth Children Series (Clan of the Cave Bear being the most recognizable).  Then I discovered Diana Gabaldon and her Outlander series.  She is the most amazing story-teller.  I am completely addicted.  If I could only have half her talent...!  Kurt Vonnegut resonnates with his unique style and wit.  He seems to be able to say so simply what we all feel yet can never articulate.   And I have also thoroughly enjoyed the clever and comical travel adventures of Bill Bryson.  If your writing style or reading habits are anywhere near attuned to the above, and you have a reading suggestion, I'd love to hear from you!  And at some point, I hope to post some of my own writing material on here, and your comments and feedback on them are always welcome.
