Profile Information

I’ve found that at some point in their lives, everyone discovers something that defines them, something that they take with them wherever they go. It’s a place inside of them, a world only they can go to when they need to escape the stress and cruelty of our own world and the people inside of it. It’s something they connect to, something they understand more than others, something so powerful to them that sometimes it’s the only remedy for a broken heart.

For instance, a musician feels this way about music. They look at a piece of music and while some would see a simple staff filled with notes and symbols, they see a magnificent language that speaks in ways that nothing else can. Most people would hear a simple song when the musician plays, but the musician hears a story filled with dynamic emotion and colorful imagery. They are drawn to the melody and the rhythm and lose themselves in their songs. They are filled with an intensity that they don’t feel anywhere else, and they feel this intensity at even the mere touch of their instrument.

An athlete connects to sports in the same way. Same with an artist to their creations, a teacher to their students, a parent to their child.

Many of us have multiple connections, including me.

As an actress, I have felt connections to my roles and to the audience. As a daughter, I have felt this connection to my parents. As a friend, I have shared this connection with others.

But I think what I can connect to most are words, as an author. I’ve found that while people haven’t always been there for me, writing has. When I feel trapped, I can usually free myself using only paper, a pencil, and my imagination. Most people would look at a notebook and see merely a notebook. But I see opportunity, pages that will one day hold stories that haven’t been written yet, stories that I need to tell.

We’ve all felt these connections, and I believe that’s what many of us cling to when there seems to be nothing and no one else.

But I also believe that some of us get too caught up in the world and the people in it. Sometimes life becomes too challenging, and we become broken. In our hearts, in our souls, in our spirits, and some of us just give up. We decide we don’t care, and we become lazy, and quit. These connections begin to fade, and as they do, your life crumbles apart around you, and you turn the wrong way to try to fix it only to find that it’s become worse.

I have lost my connections several times. When the stories I created didn’t seem good enough, when I got lost to the point that I couldn’t even create the stories anymore, I simply quit.

But the words keep coming back, and piling up inside of me until finally I have to just let them all out.

            Like right now.

So if you’re reading this, I want you to know that you should never give up on your dreams, never lose these connections, no matter what people tell you or how alone or lost you feel.

Never give up. It's as simple as that.
