~I’ve worked with children all my life. I have five of my own and for the past 20 years I have taught, managed a pre-school day care and compiled learning material. All these years I concentrated on finding a unique and original way to reach children, to connect to their world, to help them develop learning skills and to acquire life skills. I chose to approach and reach children using hands-on experience and active experimentation, curiosity and humor, the world of imagination, fantasies and personal contact.

My own children were never keen to attend organized activities during school holidays (summer camps, etc.). Together we created a special world. We made up stories in serial and were transported from our world into an imaginary one. We travelled through different eras and made up magic words, and our stories accompanied us throughout the day—at mealtimes, while riding in the car, at bath time and at bedtime. For example: on the way to the bathroom we waded through gushing rivers infested with crocodiles, were blown away by strong winds and hung tightly onto our towel-parachutes …. I created an aperture into an imaginary world so that my children could fill it with enchanting fantasies and mystery. If we did not venture out on trips, my children complained of being bored, despite the fact that their rooms resembled toy stores. What they were lacking was the intimate connection with a toy or doll that functioned as a companion to fill their imaginary world and fantasies. As a small child I didn’t have too many toys, but I had an imaginary friend who accompanied me throughout the day: I would consult with him and make space for him next to me in a car. He moved house with me, moved with me to another room, was with me when I started first grade. He supported me and bolstered my self-confidence.

As a history teacher I sought ways to arouse the curiosity of my pupils, to expose them to the world of imagination and to instill in them a desire to learn. I did this by using a hands-on method: together with the pupils, and sometimes with the parents as well, I reconstructed battlefields on a table of sand; we adopted a figure from the French

In the care center too I looked for an alternative way to connect to the children’s world, and used laughter and humor to deal with power struggles and points of friction before nap times. The children chose signs that read: I’m out wandering. Be back soon. Or I’m busy now. When using humor and laughter something wonderful happened—the children quickly let go of their anger and smiled. I had reached them.

My dream is to reach many more children and to help them develop their imaginary worlds, to arouse their curiosity and inspire them to learn, and in this way to help them develop learning skills and to acquire life skills, social skills and a healthy lifestyle.

Five years ago I decided to fulfill my dream and I opened my own business. I wrote learning material to help kindergarten children acquire learning skills through hands-on experiences and experimentation. The programs provided only a partial realization of my vision, as they touched on only a small part of the children’s lives and their daily routine in the kindergarten. I wanted to develop a broader concept that would provide a solution for the enormous need children have to create a wonderful, mysterious and fascinating world through which they can develop life skills—and so the idea of Breezy was born.
