Profile Information

I'm Tom, and I'll make no apologies for who I am. Which sounds very serious, very solemn. But I drink too much, smoke too much, wander around without a job and, sometimes, without a shower, even though a shower seems to be a strangely bright place for inspiration. My hair's too long and yes, my favourite pair of jeans are ripped and my favourite shirt is black. It's a cool shirt. Life is fun.

But I'm here because, as Dylan once told us all, the times they are a-changin', and like all great art, there is a simple but poignant and irrefutable truth in that. The times are changing. Print is sliding slowly, sadly away, and this Great Beast we've named the Internet is everywhere. It's the Big River, and we as writers and artists, creators, critics, whatever, we can swim against it until we pass out and sink like a stone, or we can get in that thing and go with the flow. Mark out our place in the water and hope it takes us somewhere sunny. So I'm diving in. One editor of one magazine, for all his or her knowledge and professionalism, is ultimately only one reader trying to make a profit from gathering more readers. What's the point? A quick buck if you're good, a quick rejection letter if not. Here, there are you guys. Thousands of you. You're like a plague. It's awesome. You can read, you can write, I'm sure many of you can do all kinds of stuff. And you know what it means to bleed onto the page. You know how it feels to open up your soul, to try and wrangle something ethereal and slippery into something concrete, tangible, lasting. I respect that, a lot. It takes courage. Balls. Another beer. And if my stories reach only two people here, only two, it's still one more than just an editor.

So have a read around. Comment if you like, or don't, let my stories speak for themselves. Just keep writing. Keep swimming towards that sunny place. I might even see you there one day, lying in the grass, a big old smile on our faces. If not, I'll probably be in the bar. Bars are great.

Peace out.
